Hi, I’m Eugene Vernon.

For nearly five decades I’ve worked in businesses of every size—from entry-level jobs to corporate management, from owning my own companies to leading production teams, from restaurants and retail to technology, litigation support, digital marketing, and artificial intelligence.

I didn’t learn business from one career. I learned it by building one.

Like many entrepreneurs, my first lessons came early. As a teenager, I scooped ice cream at Baskin-Robbins while learning what customer service really meant.

I later worked in road construction and as a junior drafting technician in the oil and gas industry, gaining an appreciation for hard work, precision, and teamwork.

My management career truly began with Captain D’s Restaurants, where I spent ten years learning how to lead people, manage operations, train teams, and solve problems under pressure.

Eventually, I took the leap into entrepreneurship. I founded Tropical Smoothies and later Tropical Food Services, operating smoothie businesses, concession operations, and catering at some of Alabama’s largest festivals and public events.

Over the years, my businesses served thousands of customers through events such as City Stages, Do Dah Day, Sloss Furnace events, the Birmingham Civic Center, the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, and Olympic soccer in Birmingham.

Entrepreneurship also taught me one of the hardest lessons in business: not every great idea succeeds in every location. When I opened Daytona’s Subs & Smoothies, I discovered firsthand that success depends on far more than having a good product. Location, timing, marketing, operations, and financial planning all matter.

Later, I transitioned into the legal services industry, serving as Operations Manager for IKON Office Solutions before helping build Freedom Court Reporting into a successful litigation support company. For over twenty years I managed production, operations, budgets, customer relationships, and large teams while watching technology completely transform the industry.

When Freedom Court Reporting was acquired by Veritext Court Reporting, I continued serving as Production Manager until retiring in 2021.

For many people, retirement means slowing down. For me, it meant starting over.

Instead of stepping away from business, I embraced emerging technology, artificial intelligence, website development, and digital marketing. I started focusing on SecureDot1 Communications, which I founded in 2011 to help small businesses compete in an increasingly digital world by providing affordable marketing, websites, social media management, and practical business solutions.

Along the way I also developed new ventures, including ShakeRiot, helped launch websites for businesses and organizations, and discovered a new passion: teaching.

Why I Created The Academy

The SecureDot1 Business Success Academy wasn’t created because I wanted to become another online instructor. It was created because I wanted to give entrepreneurs the business education I wish every small business owner had before opening their doors.

This Academy isn’t based on theory. It’s based on decades of real decisions, real mistakes, real successes, real leadership, real customers, and real businesses.

I’ve experienced economic booms and recessions, technology revolutions, business failures, business growth, corporate leadership, entrepreneurship, retirement, and reinvention.

Every lesson inside this Academy comes from experience—not just textbooks.

My Philosophy

I believe every small business owner deserves access to practical, affordable business education. You shouldn’t need an expensive MBA to understand how to build a successful business.

Business success isn’t about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about making good decisions consistently.
